Airlight-CFE Carbon Fibre Electric Wheelchair

The Airlight-CFE is a carbon fibre electric wheelchair that weighs 13.8 kg with its battery in, so it is far lighter to lift into a car boot than a steel chair. It folds to 25 cm wide, travels up to 12 km on one charge and stops by itself when you let go of the joystick. The lithium battery, charger and footrests are included, and the frame carries a 5-year warranty.

How this carbon fibre electric wheelchair works

The user steers with a joystick on the armrest and chooses one of five speed levels, up to 4.5 km/h. Two 150 W brushless motors drive the rear wheels. When the joystick is released, the chair brakes automatically, so it stays put while parked.

The 24 V 10 Ah lithium battery lifts out with one button and recharges in about 4 to 6 hours. Because the battery is removable, the chair drops to 11.8 kg for lifting. If the battery runs flat, two levers switch the chair to manual mode, so a helper can push it like an ordinary wheelchair.

To fold it, flip up the footplates, lift the seat and fold the backrest down. Folded, it measures L 80 × W 25 × H 70 cm. With the footrests lifted off, the length drops to 60 cm.

Will it fit in my car boot?
Folded, the chair measures L 80 × W 25 × H 70 cm. Lift off the footrests and the length drops to 60 cm, so it fits the boot of a compact car such as a Perodua Axia or Myvi.

Can I take it on a plane?
The battery is a 240 Wh lithium-ion pack that lifts out of the chair. Airlines generally allow a removable wheelchair battery of up to 300 Wh, carried in the cabin, so this battery is within that limit. However, every airline decides for itself, so travel is always subject to airline approval. Contact your airline before you book and tell them the battery size.

How far does it go, and how long does it take to recharge?
It travels up to 12 km on flat ground with a full battery. A heavier rider, slopes and an older battery all reduce this, so plan shorter trips at first. Recharging takes about 4 to 6 hours with the charger supplied.

Can it be used outdoors and in the rain?
Yes, on smooth and level pavements, in malls and along hospital walkways. It rides over small bumps of about 2.5 cm, but it cannot climb a kerb, so use the kerb ramp. Keep it out of the rain and away from puddles, because water can damage the electronics.

Can a helper push it?
Yes. Two levers beside the motors switch the chair to manual mode. Switch back to electric mode before the user drives, and never leave it in manual mode on a slope, because the automatic brake is off.

What does the warranty cover?
Five years on the frame, and one year on the motors, controller and battery, against manufacturing defects. Normal wear on tyres, seat fabric and armrest pads is not covered.
